Tempe Town Lake Picnic Couple Photos | Erin & Shyam
We love photos for their ability to freeze a moment in time—
Whether that moment is big or little, significant or seemingly insignificant, photos have this incredible power that really nothing else does. We photograph a lot of weddings, engagements, and maternity photos, so often as those are the “significant," milestone life moments. It’s such a treat when we are let in on the smaller moments. And this brings us to our session with Erin and Shyam at Tempe Town Lake.
Erin and Shyam have been married for almost a year and didn’t, by society’s standards, have anything “significant” to be capturing at the moment. But they, like us, recognize the importance of capturing all the big and little moments. As we were preparing for their session, we asked them the question we ask every couple we work with— what does the current season of your life look like, what is something you love doing together in this season, and how would you like that captured?
As Erin and Shyam have settled into married life together as one, they’ve had to learn to balance their faith, their work, their friends, and their marriage, and understand how to rest well together. This is such a beautiful and important part of marriage (we believe!), and finding ways to have quality time together while resting is hard as you blend two lives into one. Erin and Shyam live in Phoenix like us, and have loved soaking up all the beautiful weather we have here most of the year. They love being outside together, and something they’ve adopted into regular practice in their first year of marriage is having picnics together in one of the many parks here in Arizona.
They set out for parks with no agenda, enough snacks to sustain them, and go and simply rest together. Shyam often sleeps while Erin reads, and they talk and just soak in the quality time alongside one another. It has become so significant and special to them, and we decided to incorporate this into their session. Erin and Shyam actually met in Texas, and Tempe Town Lake reminds them so much of Lady Bird Lake in Austin. They love this park for its people watching, calming waterfront, and all the grass and trees.
We spent an evening with them there, walking up and down along the water, capturing them on one of their classic picnics, and watching planes land at Sky Harbor. A big storm had rolled into Phoenix the weekend we photographed them, and we were concerned their session would be rained out. We, instead, got this perfect little window of golden sunlight during the time we were with them, and I love the golden glow abundant in these photos!
