Usery Mountain Anniversary Session | Megan & Scott

There is nothing like East Phoenix in the Spring!!

This was another colder, rainier winter in the valley, but the fruit of that season is lush green and wildflowers everywhere! If you haven’t yet, I highly suggest venturing out to any of the many natural spaces in the east valley to see all this beauty for yourself. This is such a significant reason why Megan and Scott chose Usery Mountain Regional Park for their anniversary photos. They wanted to capture the desert landscape with notable features like cacti and the iconic mountains, but also wanted to use the opportunity to capture spring in Phoenix in all its glory—

Usery Mountain is HUGE, and spans so many thousands of acres full of miles of trails, wind caves, and all kinds of unique desert landscape views. We decided we wanted to try to have the Superstition Mountains be a focal point of their photos, since we got lucky with an overcast day, meaning Megan and Scott wouldn’t be blinded with direct sunlight their whole session while we captured the Supes. We found this trail on the south side of the park that offered everything they were looking for— the lush desert landscape with all types of saguaro and cholla cactus, as well is this super sweet, almost tunnel view of the Superstitions!

We love capturing marriage and engagements, but the very few times a year we get to capture a couple around their anniversary is extra special. This is something we’re so grateful to be experiencing in our own marriage, and something we love seeing play out in others’ too. We love the way love deepens and refines itself and becomes more mature as the years progress. Greater storms are weathered together, forming a stronger bond along the way. Two people growing up together creates space for so much learning and acceptance. When a couple truly commits to keeping their vows and choosing to endure the ups and downs of life as one, that deeper bond forms.

And when we photograph couples on their anniversary, this becomes so tangible to me. It’s something beautiful we get to creatively help bring to life while we take a couple’s photos. This is so special to me and to us, and something we’ll be grateful to do as long as God allows us.

We were fortunate to meet Megan and Scott when we joined their Bible study upon moving to Phoenix. We’ve gotten to walk closely with them these last few months, and learn of all the beautiful and not-so-beautiful things they’ve weathered together. And through it all, we get a front row view of the way they choose to joyfully work through these peaks and valleys together. It makes perfect sense that these photos encapsulate that emotion— their genuine joy for simply being with each other, laughing through life as one. We had such an incredible time documenting their love, and are grateful to walk alongside these two in real life, too!

And now, please enjoy Megan and Scott’s anniversary photos at Usery Mountain Regional Park~
