Downtown Proposal | Phoenix, AZ
A surprise marriage proposal for the ages—
Goodness, this one was so special. I love when I can just feel a couple’s love for one another even before I meet them. This was one of those moments. Eddie and Jos have been together for years— they met in college (we’ll get to one of the best stories I’ve ever heard, soon!) and have stuck by each other’s side through years of challenging school (these are two of the most accomplished people I’ve met), long bouts of long distance, and moves across the country. This moment had to be momentous, and Eddie took the planning so seriously.
Because these two are together so much, and Jos is not someone who is easy to surprise, Eddie really had to be intentional with his plan. Jos did * not * want to get engaged on a hike (I understand, lol), and told Eddie she’d rather be completely surprised than look all done up. Eddie was hoping to figure out a moment when everything aligned for the perfect proposal, and boy did he! He and Jos have a weekly routine of going to mass at St. Mary’s in downtown Phoenix before visiting a local coffee shop. He decided after mass would be the perfect time to ask Jos to marry him, because they’d be in their Sunday best, and because she likely wouldn’t suspect anything.
With the plan in motion, he found a gorgeous spot framed by palo verde trees in the park adjacent to the church and decided that would be the place. We selected a Sunday, and the proposal was on! Now about how these two met, because I just love this story—
“Jos and I met at move-in day our freshman year at Duquesne in Pittsburgh—my grandfather had given me a toolbox saying that it would help me "pick up girls," and sure enough, Jos needed a screwdriver to help assemble some of her dorm accessories.”
This very day started a deep friendship between Eddie and Jos, finally becoming something more after they accidentally kissed each other toward the end of their freshman year. It didn’t take long for them to realize they were truly each other’s person, and their story is one of a beautiful faithfulness to one another through long distance, two doctorates (like I said, the most accomplished people I’ve met!!), and years of growing up together. And now, at last, they’re getting married!
Jos was so surprised when Eddie got down on one knee and asked her to marry him on a picturesque Sunday morning in the middle of downtown Phoenix. She excitedly screamed and was so in awe of the moment. Eddie revealed her engagement ring, one she’d pointed out to him in their travels the year prior. He immediately returned to the jeweler and bought it with his summer earnings, carrying it with him until the perfect time.
Telling the story of this downtown Phoenix proposal was so easy, because the emotion between these two was so raw. Jos was genuinely surprised, and really was taken aback for moments long after the actual moment went down. During our proposal sessions, we usually have time to take some candid couple portraits after, and it was so fun to see her randomly pause and take in the moment time and time again in the little bit of time that followed the proposal. The excited energy between Eddie and Jos was just electric in this moment.
As we ran through the streets of downtown Phoenix together after the proposal, they were so excited to share the news with their friends from church, as well as the priest who said mass that morning. He blessed Jos’ ring for her, and all these little moments were such an honor to witness and capture. I am so grateful for the little snippet of time when my path crossed Eddie and Jos’. These two have such a zest for life, and are so in love with one another!
