The Scott Proposal | Adam & Rylee
The Canal Club is our favorite place for a night out in Scottsdale when we’re feeling in a creative rut—
And if there is any one impression that the number of the trips we’ve made to The Scott Resort has left on me is this— I have been so excited for the day I’d be able to create professionally at this iconic property. Joseph and I regularly bring our film camera here to play around with the many little picturesque corners of the resort and its iconic mid century decor, experimenting with composition and simply getting inspiration. You could probably imagine my excitement when Adam reached out and told me he was hoping to propose to his long time girlfriend, Rylee, on the property while they were enjoying a staycation together!
Part of Adam’s plan was also to surprise Rylee with having their closest friends and family present to celebrate, and he was hoping to select a location on The Scott’s property where they could watch from afar. We went and scouted it together, and decided the patio at The Canal Club would be the best location, as excited family could watch from inside the bar while Adam and Rylee had their moment outside. The proposal went down in mid-August, meaning it was still hot enough in Scottsdale for the patio to be pretty empty, and we took full advantage. I love the depth of this space, with soft light coming in from outside in the direct sunlight, and all kinds of trendy decor pieces and greenery as the backdrop.
I also love the story we were able to tell with these photos. Rylee simply thought she and Adam were on their way to dinner at The Canal Club when he got down on one knee. After she said yes, their sweet community came running out to congratulate them with excited hugs and well wishes. This was actually the first proposal I’ve photographed with friends and family present, and it added such a beautiful element to the moment!
After all the excitement passed (and Rylee and Adam got a celebratory glass of wine), we wandered all over the beautiful resort property. I brought my flash to the proposal, hoping they would be down to take some direct shots inside the hotel’s main building. I was so excited when I saw just how sparkly Rylee’s ring was (scroll to see how incredible it is!!), and immediately knew this would photograph so well with a little flash on it. I’m so grateful to the team at The Scott for letting us take photos in front of the iconic front desk (very Wes Anderson in my opinion), with the vaulted ceilings of the lobby, and, of course, with The Canal Club’s neon sign. I decided to give these photos a little touch of a vintage film edit to match the vibes of the resort too!
I am so proud of how these photos turned out, both from a storytelling perspective, and from the amount of creativity that came forward during this session. I hope you enjoy this glimpse into Rylee and Adam’s engagement at The Canal Club!
