Canyon Lake Proposal | Ethan & Brooklyn

One of the most scenic spots in Phoenix for a proposal—

Scouting for Brooklyn and Ethan’s proposal was my introduction to Canyon Lake, and I am so excited to be back here a few more times this fall for sessions! The East Valley is so incredibly picturesque between the Superstitions and the high canyon walls carved out by the Salt River. Driving Highway 88 out east is one of my favorite things to do here, and seeing the rugged desert landscape open up to the very expansive Canyon Lake never gets old! Canyon Lake is the very place Ethan and Brooklyn had their first date, and Ethan was hoping for a full circle moment when planning his proposal to Brooklyn.

He reached out to me a few months before the proposal with his idea of finding a scenic spot along the lake shore to set up a surprise picnic for Brooklyn. Together, we scoured the shoreline for a spot with a view that would also provide some privacy from the popular swimming and boating area in the hot Phoenix summer (he was planning to propose in July, a time of year when Canyon Lake is full of people!). After some hiking, we located this perfect, flat, cliff-top spot overlooking the entirety of the lake, and, of course, with some token saguaro to fully capture the desert landscape.

I arrived early, and got to help Ethan and Brooklyn’s good friends set up the picnic. I hadn’t met Ethan or Brooklyn yet, but I could just tell how high quality of people they were by the friends who so selflessly gave up their Saturday evening to decorate the entire space, even in the 115 degree Phoenix heat. The friends headed out just before Ethan and Brooklyn arrived, and the sun dipped perfectly behind the steep cliffs, leaving the proposal spot shaded with Canyon Lake glittering in the background.

This proved to be the perfect setting for a proposal (I highly recommend it to anyone looking for good spots in the Phoenix area!). I photographed the moment, of course, and a mix of storytelling, candid photos and more “engagement session” type photos as sunset gave way to a beautifully colorful blue hour. Arizona is known for its sunsets, and I feel like this one really put the desert beauty on display. I hope you enjoy this little glimpse into Brooklyn and Ethan’s engagement at Canyon Lake!
