Watson Lake Elopement | Prescott, AZ
An iconic location for a Northern Arizona elopement,
Watson Lake just outside Prescott makes for quite the unique backdrop! This whole area of the southwest is known for its red rocks and other exemplary geology, and this setting is truly no different. For couples hoping to get married in Northern Arizona, but maybe aren’t tied to the crowds of Sedona or the remote nature of Lake Powell, Watson Lake should certainly be on your list! Though smaller in size, the views are absolutely spectacular, and really unlike anything I’ve seen in all my travels. Prescott is significantly less trafficked than the more popular areas in this part of the state like Flagstaff and the Grand Canyon, and makes for a much less hectic scene. Come to get married during the shoulder season, and you can expect an almost completely private wedding ceremony and unobstructed views of the scenic lake too!
And English and Michael sought no shortage of incredible views throughout the entire time we worked together. You might remember their gorgeous engagements at the equally scenic Sedona Airport over the summer! Though, instead of sweating like crazy in the summer Arizona heat like we did at their engagement session, we nearly froze solid on their elopement day in November. Photographing a wedding in the snow was certainly not on my Arizona elopement photographer bingo card, but here we are. Extreme weather aside, I’m so grateful these two included me in their elopement (and engagement!!) plans in Northern Arizona, and I really just had the best time celebrating them all summer and fall :)
We began English and Michael’s day in downtown Prescott, where the snow was falling plentifully, and where we meandered around town, by the courthouse and along the creek to catch the colorful fall leaves. English and Michael expected snow about as little as I did, so we took lots of breaks to reheat! Their closest friends accompanied us and were absolute champs, helping with keeping us warm and laughing through the whole thing (see photos of us all meandering through downtown together, some of my favorites the whole day honestly!).
After we had our fill of the more urban setting (in the very cozy and quaint Prescott, haha), we made our way out to Watson Lake, where we were treated to our first views of the gorgeous setting. Because of the “driving” (I am a weak Arizonan) snow, absolutely no one else was at the lake, and we got to enjoy the unobstructed, quiet nature of the place all to ourselves, exactly what English and Michael envisioned when they dreamed up their elopement day. Their immediate family joined us, and the ceremony began. How special it was to be surrounded by their closest people while getting married in the most beautiful setting!
I loved this stress free day, where nothing really mattered outside English and Michael’s love and commitment to each other, and also staying warm. There was no timeline or rigid shot list to distract from their marriage, just delighting in each other’s, and their people’s company. I will always love elopements for this reason, and because they always seem to take place in the most beautiful of settings 🤤.
