A Hike Across the Oceano Dunes | Carolyn & Kenan's Engagement Photos
Every so often, our couples take us up on the offer of making their engagement photos a true adventure.
We love when this happens! Mostly because we love a good hike or chance to explore something new, but also because we tend to photograph our favorite engagement session locations in San Luis Obispo a ton, and it is so fun to see them in a whole different light. One of these favorite spots is the Oceano Dunes near Pismo Beach- SLO’s very own set of sprawling sand dunes that look straight out of the Sahara Desert.
We were so grateful when Carolyn and Kenan pulled up to the dunes to meet us and proposed the idea of trekking all the way to the nearby beach (a good two and a half miles across the dunes). When we arrived in Pismo for their session, we were absolutely at a point in our season in which we were beginning to really feel the effects of how grueling it had been. While we are truly unable to articulate how grateful we are at the sheer number of couples who wanted us to photograph them this year, we were also so, so tired from the amount of work we’d taken on. I think if we had shown up to photograph yet another standard engagement session that night, we would’ve imploded.
Another caveat to the evening— we were in the middle of a record breaking heat wave in San Luis Obispo County. We so deeply desired to blow off some steam, and Carolyn and Kenan are just about the most hilarious, wonderful people to spend a few hours with. And so we set off, trekking our way across the sand dunes until our toes touched the ocean, pausing every now and then to capture little moments showcasing Carolyn and Kenan’s sweet, goofy, best-friend kind of relationship.
These images make me smile every time I look at them, and I get a sweet rush of emotion remembering how we felt after collapsing in the car long after the sunset, so tired and sweaty, but so full of life and grateful. Grateful that our couples are the kind of people we get to also call friends. Grateful, even in the hard moments, that we get to do this for a living. Grateful that we get to celebrate Carolyn and Kenan in 2023 as they get married!
